The producer of Kodamid (Nycomed) reported in the spring of 2010 that they had to change suppliers of an ingredient in Kodamid. This means that the Medicines Agency has to verify that the new raw material meets the applicable rules. It ensures us that the patients get medicine of the quality we expect.
We are pleased that there will be made careful control of our medicine.
But we're not particularly thrilled that it takes 7 months to complete the checks needed before the medicine can get back on the market. We understand that it may take some time to implement an inspection and possible have some chemical analyses, but 7 months is a long time. In the food market, a business may book an inspection, and the authorities are obliged to have published the results within 2 months.
Medicines Agency will not disclose the proceedings for approval of establishments for the production of medicines.
We want a faster turnaround time for inspections made by Medicines Agency. It is cumbersome and too expensive to have to rely on Magistrel production to produce medicines just because the Medicines Agency spends months on an approval.
Magistriel production means that a pharmacy with a particular expertise is approved by the Medicines Authority to produce medicines from raw materials.
There are two private pharmacies (Glostrup and Skanderborg) and several hospital pharmacies, which are approved for this production. Skanderborg pharmacy announced in the spring 2010, that 100 tablets cost 222.60 DKK, and there may be delays in delivery because it can be difficult to procure the raw materials.
Glostrup pharmacy announced simultaneously that the tablets costing 225.30 DKK for 100 tablets.
The price for a Kodamid tablet on 15th December was 1.40 DKK if you bought 200 tablets or 1.64 DKK per tablet if you bought 100 tablets, that is the patients had to pay about 30% extra because of the slow administration.
